Officials may know fire’s cause Monday
Blaze destroyed vacant Alex home on Friday

ALEXANDRIA — Fire officials believe they’ll know on Monday what caused a fire that destroyed an Alexandria home on Friday.

Alexandria Fire Lt. Brian Cuneo said Saturday investigators with his department were at the fire scene until about 10 p.m. Friday going through the wreckage, trying to determine where the blaze started and what sparked it.

“It will probably be Monday before we complete the investigation,” Cuneo said, “because we still have to find the owner.”

Firefighters were called to the single-story home at 107 Grant St. on the town’s north side at about 6:20 p.m. The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The blaze was under control in about an hour.

Cuneo said Saturday that, along with the cause, fire investigators would also likely know Monday where the fire began in the small home. The home was vacant, but had working electricity, he previously said. The residence is in foreclosure.

The home is a complete loss. The heat from the blaze was enough to melt siding on neighboring homes.

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze. Alexandria firefighters were assisted at the scene by Summitville and Pike Creek Township firefighters, and officials with Madison County Emergency Management. Richland Township firefighters manned the Alexandria fire station while the other firefighters extinguished the blaze.
