Bachelorette: Jill McQueary calls selection humbling

Friends lead charge for best bachelorette

ANDERSON, Ind. — Jill McQueary’s selection as Madison County’s Best Bachelorette surprised her, but not so much her friends who nominated her. “They’re my cheerleaders,” McQueary said.

Missy Fox was among those friends leading the cheers for McQueary.

“I want her to find a good man. She needs and deserves a good man in her life,” said Fox, McQueary’s hairstylist and friend since middle school. “She would be bringing so much good into a man’s life, and I just want her to receive the same. I’m so happy for her.”

McQueary, who works at St. John’s Medical Center in health information management, said she was overwhelmed to learn that readers of The Herald Bulletin had selected her as Madison County’s Best Bachelorette.

“Oh my gosh, this is wonderful!” McQueary said of her selection.

McQueary said that in the last couple of years she went through a separation after a relationship of eight years ended. Before that, she had been in a 14-year relationship with her high school sweetheart. “So I’ve not done a lot of dating,” she said.

So when her friends and work colleagues told her they were going to nominate her for Best Bachelorette, “I said, ‘Oh, OK, whatever,’” McQueary said. She soon learned that she was in the Top 5.

“It was actually kind of humbling because I’ve never been nominated for anything. It’s a wonderful group of people I’m surrounded with.”

People such as longtime friend Stacy Melliere. “There’s a whole bunch of people that were on her side,” said Melliere, also a friend since middle school. “We’ve been through a lot of things together.”

McQueary said dating can be tough for someone who’s been in a relationship for many years.

“I still kind of harbor some of those old-fashioned values, and it’s really hard to meet people. Of course there’s Facebook, and that’s rekindled a lot of relationships,” she said. “But it’s kind of rough out there being single, being a single parent.”
