7:01 p.m.: UPDATED: Local man shot at, robbed

— INDIANAPOLIS — An Anderson man was hospitalized Wednesday after being shot at and robbed outside a Fishers bank.
Jay Sniegowski, 51, of Anderson, was exiting his car in the parking lot of National City Bank at 7876 E. 96th St., just east of Interstate 69, around 9:15 a.m. when an unknown man charged at him. According to police, Sniegowski got back in the car and attempted to pull away, at which time the man fired a shot through his window.
When the gunman demanded money, Sniegowski handed him an empty bag, and the man fled on foot.
“As he starts to get out of his car, the suspect runs at his car,” said Sgt. Gary Hepp of the Fishers Police Department. “The man fires one round through the window and takes off running.”
A manager at a nearby Wendy’s restaurant, Sniegowski was treated for injuries caused by broken glass at Community North Hospital and released.
“(Sniegowski) was able to drive up to the drive-up window and get bank employees’ attention,” Hepp said. “They came out and rendered aid and called 911.”
Sniegowski told investigators he noticed the man in the area when he first arrived, but thought nothing of it. Police say the gunman wore a puffy, gray coat and a white hat, but an active manhunt was called off around midday Wednesday.
Tracy Mills, marketing director for a group of Wendy’s franchises, told the Indianapolis Star that Sniegowski went home and was resting after the incident.
“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing what he was supposed to do,” Mills said. “And we’re thankful he’s OK.”
