11:52 p.m.: UPDATE: Damage reported in south part of county

Staff and Wire Reports

Southern Madison County was under a tornado warning for about an hour late Friday night as vicious storms raked across central Indiana, lashing several counties with torrential rains and damaging winds and spawning reports of tornadoes.

Among the reports of damage Friday, a barn was blown off its foundation near the intersection of Indiana 9 and County Road 900 West. Scores of phone and cable lines were down in that area, as well as several trees. Also, a tree reportedly blew over onto a house in Ingalls.

A power outage was also reported in areas of Pendleton, west of County Road 100 West. No further information was available at press time from Duke Energy.

According to a spokesman from Anderson Municipal Light & Power, an area of the city around Tenth Street and Madison Avenue experienced a power outage Friday night as well, although the extent of that outage was not immediately known.

The National Weather Service says weather spotters reported two tornadoes northeast of Lafayette about 7:30 p.m. Funnel clouds also were reported in Vermillion County and near Marion.

About 10,000 Duke Energy customers were without electricity at one point in counties north of Indianapolis, but power was restored to all but 3,800 by 10 p.m.

The weather service says winds estimated at 70 to 80 mph downed trees and damaged homes in Andrews in Huntington County near Fort Wayne, and the storm dumped more than 4 inches of rain in White County. Tornado warnings were issued for several counties as the storms headed southeast.
