Elwood council faced with annexation deadline

ELWOOD — The Elwood City Council considered the annexation of three areas into the city limits in hopes of beating an April 1 state deadline that bars annexations until 2015.

A moratorium is being placed on annexations until July 1, 2015, so the General Assembly can study the annexation issue in Indiana.

The three spots under consideration for annexation into Elwood include Updegraff Furniture on Elwood's west side, the former Swifty gas station location south of downtown and the Forest Hills subdivision.

The Elwood City Development Commission has reported that at least 51 percent of the landowners in the area favor the annexation, which would constitute a voluntary annexation.

Also on Monday, the council discussed borrowing money to buy the empty American Electric Power building along Indiana 28 with hopes that another business will locate there.

Mayor Ron Arnold was not present at the meeting. Elwood public information officer Jeff Howe said Arnold had to assist a relative.

Sunday night, Madison County sheriff's deputies went to Arnold's home after Arnold's wife called police. According to Sheriff Ron Richardson, she requested officers' help in dealing with "trouble" with one of Arnold's sons.

Richardson said Monday that deputies determined there was not cause to remove the son from the home, and they cleared the scene without making an arrest. Richardson did not know whether Arnold was home at the time of the incident.
