ANDERSON, Ind. —
“There are low-functioning people in the world, but they don’t go around raping a 93-year-old woman,” he said.
He said Taylor will be 18 in a month.
In processing the sentence, Judge Newman said Taylor has a prior criminal history and went through rehabilitation but still broke the law. Newman said the Indiana Department of Correction will have to take special care of Taylor because he entered pleas of guilty but mentally ill.
On July 16, Taylor kicked in the locked door to Rudolf’s home in the 3600 block of Hamilton Place. He then confined her to a bed and raped her, according to previous court and police records.
Last October, Newman ruled that Taylor was mentally incompetent to stand trial. At the time, Newman said it was his responsibility as a judge to act as a gatekeeper to ensure a fair trial, and it would be in the best interest of justice to rule Taylor incompetent.
Taylor was sent to Logansport State Hospital, a psychiatric facility, for nearly three months. In December, officials in Logansport deemed Taylor was competent to stand trial and he was returned to the Madison County Jail.
