Manhunt called off after suspect eludes police

Alexandria schools placed on lockdown for about an hour

Police called off the search for a man who eluded authorities trying to serve a warrant.

John Richards escaped police custody, causing about an hour-long manhunt in the Alexandria area on Wednesday afternoon.

Madison County sheriff's deputies were trying to serve a warrant to Richards for violation of work release, failure to return to detention and non-support of a dependent child.

Richards, who was believed to be at a home in the 400 block of Mill Street, fled from the deputies. The incident also caused Alexandria schools to be placed on lockdown temporarily.

Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said the search was called off about 12:45 p.m. because of the non-violent nature of Richards' offenses, but he's hopeful neighbors and area residents who might have clues offer tips on the man's whereabouts.

Before noon, several police units, including a police dog, were searching for Richards. Around the same time, Alexandria school officials confirmed that all community schools had been placed on lockdown, and no one was allowed in or out of school buildings including the administration office. An additional K-9 unit from Elwood assisted in the search.

Richards was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue cut-off shirt. He was described as a 5-foot-8-inch, 150-pound white male.

Another man at the Mill Street address who was also wanted was taken into custody by police.

Richardson asked anyone with information about Richards to call the detective division of the Madison County Sheriff's Department at 646-9281 or county dispatchers at 642-0221.
