Indiana House speaker has surgery for knee infection

INDIANAPOLIS — The leader of the Indiana House underwent surgery Tuesday for a knee infection and will miss at least the next week of the legislative session while he recovers.

Republican Speaker Brian Bosma learned from tests Monday that an infection had developed from an artificial knee replacement he underwent last summer and needed immediate surgery, said Speaker Pro Tem Eric Turner, R-Cicero.

"The surgery went very well and caught the infection early," Turner told House members.

Bosma wasn't present in the House on Monday, and Turner said the speaker was expected to be out until at least late next week.

Bosma, 55, was resting comfortably at a hospital after the surgery, a House spokeswoman said.

Bosma was first elected to the House in 1986 representing a northeastern suburban Indianapolis district and has been the top House Republican — either as speaker or minority leader — since 2001.

Bosma will be absent as the General Assembly heads toward its late April deadline for adjourning this year's legislative session. Major items still being debated include the new two-year state budget and Republican Gov. Mike Pence's proposed individual income tax cut that Bosma and other GOP legislative leaders have resisted.

Pence said in a statement that he and his wife were concerned to learn about Bosma's condition and were praying for his swift recovery.

"Speaker Bosma is a leader we deeply respect and a personal friend, and we look forward to his return to serving Hoosiers in the coming days," the governor's statement said.

Turner, a House member for 22 years, will be the regular presiding officer while Bosma is absent.
