Noblesville man dies after driving SUV into pond

WESTFIELD, Ind. — A central Indiana man has died after driving his SUV into a retention pond.

Westfield police say 22-year-old Alexander Cottom of Noblesville was pronounced dead at an Indianapolis hospital .

Residents of a subdivision tell police they saw the SUV make a sharp turn into the pond and go under the water Saturday night. They looked on while divers searched the pond for nearly 45 minutes before pulling Cottom from the water.

Police Capt. Charles Hollowell says Cottom is believed to have died from drowning or hypothermia but the incident remains under investigation.

It's not clear why Cottom drove into the pond about 20 miles north of Indianapolis. He was the only person in the vehicle.
