Police arrest teen suspected of raping 93-year-old woman

ANDERSON, Ind. — Police arrested a teen in connection with the July rape of a 93-year-old woman on Friday.

The name of the 17-year-old male cannot yet be released because he is a juvenile. Officially, police have the suspect on a 72-hour hold until more evidence can be gathered, but Anderson Police Department spokesman Joel Sandefur said he believes they’ve found the culprit.

The teen, who was already incarcerated at the Madison County Youth Center, will face a hearing on Monday where he will be waived to adult court. While some crimes might not qualify for a minor to be tried as an adult, Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said it is merely a formality in this case.

“It will be automatic,” Cummings said.

The attack happened after midnight on July 16 in the elderly woman’s home in the 3600 block of Hamilton Place in the Polish Acre neighborhood. The suspect broke into her locked house, seemingly with the sole purpose of raping her. Nothing was reported stolen from the home and nothing was vandalized. Sandefur called the attack “heinous.”

According to Sandefur, the department will publish a press release on Monday providing more information about the suspect and the investigation.

“We know the case has caused a lot of concern in the community and we’ll be able to discuss it a little more on Monday,” the detective said.

The attack has garnered some attention from the community due of the nature of the crime and because the victim was a guest of honor at Colts training camp at Anderson University earlier this month. She met with team owner Jim Irsay, head coach Chuck Pagano and star quarterback Andrew Luck at camp on Aug. 4.

Cummings said police worked tirelessly on this case and should be commended.

“We’ve had a few cases like this over the course of my career,” said the prosecutor. “There’s been a handful that I think were more disturbing than this one, but just a handful. This one got our attention.”

Attempts to contact the victim and her family on Friday were unsuccessful.
