City repairs one leak, turns attention to second

ANDERSON, Ind. —  Work crews repaired one water main break overnight at the Wheeler Avenue Water Treatment Plant and are now attempting to fix a second leaking main underneath it, said Anderson public information officer Charlee Turner.

A 24-inch concrete main that feeds raw water from eight city wells into the treatment plant apparently blew out and was discovered Wednesday by an Anderson Municipal Power and Light Co. employee working at the Wheeler substation. That failed line provides about 50 percent of the city’s daily water needs.

To complicate matters, a second main immediately below the first also sprang a leak. That main carries treated water to users.

City officials blamed the failed mains on age. Both lines were apparently installed in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
