Elwood girls basketball coach charged with child seduction, official misconduct

Kessinger suspended without pay

ELWOOD, Ind. — Elwood High School girls basketball coach Thomas Kessinger, 29, is being charged with child seduction and official misconduct, both Class D felonies, according to Elwood police.

Police Chief Sam Hanna said the Indiana Department of Child Services contacted him and Elwood school officials in reference to a complaint over an inappropriate relationship between Kessinger and a 17-year-old player.

Elwood Community Schools interim Superintendent Tom Austin and Elwood High School Principal David Rutherford confronted Kessinger about the allegations, according to a press released issued by the City of Elwood.

Elwood police then conducted interviews that reportedly confirmed the allegations. Charges will be filed, and Kessinger is expected to “turn himself in” to authorities today.

Elwood Community Schools officials have suspended Kessinger without pay, pending action at the May 2 school board meeting where termination will be considered, the press release said.
