Anderson man charged with sexual battery

ANDERSON, Ind. — A suspect was in custody Friday night after he was accused of sexually touching a woman while she was sleeping early Friday morning.

Dwayne E. Streaty, 42, of Anderson, faces a charge of sexual battery and remained Friday night in the Madison County jail on $5,000 bond.

Police responded to a call for help from the woman at her mother’s house in the 1200 block of West 22nd Street about 1 a.m. When they arrived, the woman told officers she had fallen asleep in her mother’s bedroom and awakened to find Streaty touching her. The woman, who told police she knows Streaty, woke up and yelled at him to stop touching her, according to the affidavit. She said she then ran out of the room to leave the house and found the doors locked and nobody else home. She called police and her mother after leaving the house.

Anderson Police Detective Joel Sandefur said sexual assault is something that shouldn’t be tolerated, regardless of whether the victim knows the suspect.

“There can be a reluctance to report when it’s somebody close and there’s some embarrassment involved,” Sandefur said. “But it just doesn’t do the victim any justice if it’s not reported.”
