NJ gay couple can't get marriage license

TRENTION, N.J. — Two plaintiffs in the lawsuit that brought same-sex marriage to New Jersey say they have not been able to get a license to wed.

Karen and Marcye Nicholson-McFadden said Sunday they tried to apply for a marriage license in Aberdeen.

The town clerk told the couple on Friday she couldn't issue a license to a same-sex couple without further instructions from the state.

Gov. Chris Christie had instructed the Department of Health to cooperate with municipalities to issue licenses. The clerk did not immediately return a call to comment Sunday.

The New Jersey Supreme Court last week refused to delay a lower court order for the state to start recognizing same-sex marriages at 12:01 a.m. Monday. Several couples are expected to marry right as the state begins recognizing the unions.
