Squirrel knocks out power in Edgewood, Anderson

Light & Power crews restore power within 30 minutes

ANDERSON, Ind. — A squirrel sent much of Edgewood and the west side of Anderson into a brief blackout after it got inside the Park Road substation and knocked out the power.

John Wood, operation supervisor for Anderson Municipal Light & Power, said about 4,900 people were without power for about 25 minutes after a squirrel climbed into the substation's machinery and caused a short. The affected area covered all of Edgewood and stretched south past 53rd Street almost to Interstate 69.

Multiple traffic lights were out in the area as well including along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Madison Avenue to 38th Street. No accidents were reported due to the lights being out.

Wood said crews got out to the area quickly and got the power back on in a short amount of time given the outage area.
