Local ISTEP+ scores generally improve

Killbuck Elementary, Alexandria High see largest gains

ANDERSON, Ind. — ISTEP+ scores for local schools generally improved over 2009, according to results released Wednesday by the Indiana Department of Education.

Anderson’s Killbuck Elementary School and Alexandria High School saw the greatest gain.

Killbuck increased its overall passing rate for all students from 65 percent to 83 percent. The passing rate on the English portion of the exam increased from 69 percent to 90 percent for all grades, while the passing rate on the math portion increased from 75 percent to 86 percent. Killbuck is one of four Anderson elementary schools that will close next school year as part of a consolidation plan.

Alexandria High saw its overall passing rate for all students improve from 42 percent to 66 percent. The passing rate on the English portion jumped fro 50 percent to 77 percent, while the math passing rate increased from 54 percent to 74 percent.

In 2009, Indiana added spring ISTEP+ testing to the traditional fall evaluation. This year marks the first time ISTEP+ tested Indiana students exclusively in the spring.
