Local florists say Valentine's Day is a busy time of year

ANDERSON, Ind. — Someone is getting three dozen roses today, making it one of Ratsamy Brier’s largest Valentine’s Day orders.

“A man ordered them for his wife,” she said. “We don’t have anything too unique this year, but that is the biggest one.”

Brier, owner of Toles Flowers, 627 Nichol Ave., can deliver more than 300 orders on Valentine’s Day and this year, that might just happen.

To prepare for the demand, Brier ordered about 1,500 extra roses, hired seven additional delivery drivers and has crammed more hours into her workdays this week. Valentine’s Day, however, is not her busiest time of the year.

“It’s Mother’s Day,” she said. “Not everyone has a sweetheart, but everyone has a mother.”

Brier said her favorite thing about today is witnessing the love people have for each other.

“When people do the cards they will start to cry and have to call back,” she said. “You can tell they really love that person.”

Thanks to advances in technology, online ordering has made sending that special someone flowers even easier, Brier said. Almost half of the orders she filled for Valentine’s Day were made online.

Dolores Ferree, one of the owners of Posy Shop, 909 S. Nursery Road, said people want different things for different occasions, and balloons and teddy bears are always popular on Valentine’s Day.

In the 63 years she has worked in her shop, Ferree said she has seen her share of funny and creative ways people have expressed their love.

“This year we had a guy say, ‘I hope you likey, likey, likey these beautiful flowers,’” she said with a laugh. “We also had a serviceman stationed in Amsterdam, Holland, order flowers for his girlfriend.

“A lot of people are ordering tulips and on the card they say, ‘I want you to put your two lips next to mine.’”
