---- — ANDERSON — A love of art, home décor and decorating drew three high school friends together, but their passion for painting, fixing up, creating and crafting is the driving force behind one of Anderson’s newest downtown businesses, Three Birds on a Wire.
Chris Hardy Miller, Cecilia Hathaway Calvert and Laurie Jackson Hosier Gregory became partners in October 2012, opening the business in a small booth space at Sell it Again Sam in Anderson.
Not long after that, the women said they got the “fever” for their business and decided to open their own store, desiring a location in downtown Anderson.
Three Birds on a Wire, 12 E. 10th St., sells antiques, glassware, chalk-painted furniture, handcrafted woodworking, greeting cards, scarves and jewelry, as well as new and gently used items of all kinds.
"We love to decorate for all of the holidays and you will always be able to find something geared toward that special occasion," said Miller. “It's the perfect place to find something unique, original, and sometimes handmade."
The shop, located a block from Meridian Street, features unique gifts and home décor in addition to antiques and vintage wares — some of which, the women say, have been passed down through their families.
"It is hard to part with things but unfortunately, sometimes you just have to let go of the tangible things and hold tight to the memories,” Miller said.
The women located downtown because it is where their roots are, and they are looking forward to seeing other storefronts opening in the area.
“It would be great to have downtown Anderson revitalized with small, original, artsy-type places popping up everywhere," said Miller. “We want to see Anderson become a destination — a place where people can visit and spend a few hours just going from shop to shop.”
During their travels, the owners said they have seen many small towns that support the kind of shop they have in the downtown area, and it may take awhile, but they say they hope to see it in Anderson’s future.
The women say they will always be "Three Birds on a Wire" even though Laurie, their “third bird,” passed away last year.
“We know she is looking down on us smiling and encouraging us to ‘go out on a limb’ and give it our best,” said Miller.
