---- — ANDERSON – Several Madison County employees expressed surprise at the $500 bonus they received in their most recent paycheck, using it to make the Christmas holiday a little brighter.

Madison County Council last month voted to give all full-time employees a $500 bonus for this year and a 3 percent salary increase in 2014.

Several employees said Thursday the bonus, received Dec. 20, made the Christmas holiday a little brighter for their families.

“I was very shocked,” Jodi Allen said of the $500 bonus. “I didn’t expect it at all. It went toward Christmas shopping. I tried to make everyone’s Christmas a little brighter.”

Allen said as soon as the bonus was announced, she planned to spend the additional money on Christmas.

“I was happily surprised about the 3 percent raise,” she said. “It all made the season better.”

Cindy Parrish said both the bonus and pay increase came as a surprise since it has been about four years since county employees received additional compensation.

“Once I learned about the bonus, I knew it was going to Christmas,” she said. “I bought for other people, nothing for myself.”

Parrish said the $500 bonus meant she didn’t have to dip into a savings account for Christmas presents.

Debbie Bowling also expressed surprise at both the bonus and the salary increase for 2014.

“It made Christmas a little better,” she said of the bonus money. “I spent a little more on Christmas for family members.”

Anjie Cox used the $500 bonus to pay her car insurance premium for the next six months.

“I was a good girl, I paid a bill,” Cox said. “The additional money will go toward other bills. Any extra money helps.”
