Jesse Wilkerson: What is the value and essence of time?

“This thing all things devours:

Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;

Gnaws iron, bites steel;

Grinds hard stones to meal;

Slays king, ruins town,

And beats high mountains down.”

— J.R. Tolken

Time has a soul. It lives and breathes. It gives birth and provides a processional to death. Time is a balance that softens hearts. It makes knowledge attainable and forgiveness possible. Time equals distance divided by speed.

What is the value and essence of time? Think in terms of how we all have at one time or another wasted it. Think of a deceased love one and the time you spent with them while living. What else could you have done? Where else could you have gone? What else could you have spent time saying?

Value is essentially something’s worth. When I locate where people are in life by the words they use I often hear what is most valuable to them in short form in a matter of minutes. The older we get the more valuable time becomes. I don’t know if wisdom kicks in or we become exposed to how to do things better, but somewhere along the line time becomes more and more valuable.

Essence is the true substance of a thing. As you journey through time, begin to take inventory of every moment. How do you spend your days? More importantly what do you spend time thinking about? Who do you allow to occupy your time?

Time should be cherished. It should be shared with those who equally appreciate its value. I see time as a governor who has no prejudice, but embodies opportunity. Time is a resource. It can be traded and sold. Time is an employer. It settles at your worth and can dictate your behavior and or daily task.

The true value of time is knowing what to do with what you have. Don’t waste time! Don’t give your time to negative people. Don’t lose time by giving up on things that you have invested your time developing.
