MUNCIE — Herald Bulletin Publisher Henry Bird received the Indiana Journalism Award on Wednesday during the Ball State University Department of Journalism's annual awards luncheon.
Bird was honored for his accomplishments and service to the newspaper industry in Indiana. He previously was publisher of The Star Press in Muncie.
"Henry has a long record of publishing excellence and community service in Anderson, Muncie and elsewhere," Ball State journalism professor David Sumner said. "Our faculty members know him and how much he has done. Everyone recognizes what a great heart he has and his genuine concern for everyone he works with."
Bird joined The Herald Bulletin's parent company, Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., in 2005 as vice president and Midwest Division manager and was later promoted to oversee the organization's newspapers in Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota and Indiana.
In 2013, Bird received the Hoosier State Press Association's Distinguished Service Award.
Former Anderson Daily Bulletin reporter Maggie Walter was also honored at the Wednesday luncheon. Walter, who worked at the Bulletin in the early 1980s, received the Outstanding BSU Journalism Alumnus Award.
Walter is now an associate professor in the Missouri School of Journalism, as well as an editor at the Columbia Missourian.
