Tenth Street students win first in nationwide Nestle contest

Classes give funds from crafts to Humane Society

ANDERSON — While students at Tenth Street Elementary School learned how to be good entrepreneurs with an end-of-the-year class project, they also learned how to be good philanthropists when they turned around and gave the money to the Madison County Humane Society.

The kids raised $510 for the organization through the making of crafts such as jewelry, bookmarks and duct tape wallets, and selling them to other students at school.

And for their efforts, Dawn Sachse’s fourth-grade and Julie Lallathin’s fifth-grade classes came in first in the nationwide Nestle’s Very Best in Youth/ Adopt-A-School Community Service Challenge.

“I think lots of good things came out of the experience for the kids,” Sachse said.

Fourth-grader Andrew Richards’ favorite part was handing the money over to Humane Society Director Susie Schieve because, without money donations like it, he said, the Humane Society wouldn’t be able to shelter as many animals.

“The director looked really happy,” fourth-grader Logan Knight said. “It made me pretty happy, too.”

Richards liked the “super lovable” pit bull, Sue, that Schieve brought with her, so much that he and his family went to see about adopting her just to learn she’d already found a home.

“We chose the Humane Society because a lot of kids love animals like I do,” he said.

“We all felt like we had accomplished something really big,” Knight added.

As for the actual business project, the kids not only had to make their own products, but advertise them with posters and fliers before selling them on Entrepreneur Day.

Richards sold all 30 of his football posters. “It was pretty cool,” he said. “We got to tell people what it was about and how we did it. The best part was getting someone to buy it.”
