Shoppers pack Ollie's grand opening event

Bargains draw large crowd to River Ridge Plaza

ANDERSON — A long line of people lined up outside Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in anticipation of its grand opening and the bargains they found quickly filled every available shopping cart in the store.

Robert Hodge, of Anderson, said there was a nice variety of items that were very reasonably priced.

“You could probably go to Wal-Mart and find some of the same stuff there, but you won’t pay the same price,” he said.

Ollie’s specializes in closeout merchandise and features the slogan, “good stuff cheap.” The Anderson store is located at 1634 S. Scatterfield Road. The store’s grand opening on Wednesday in River Ridge Plaza was the seventh store that Tom Habbyshaw, Ollie’s district team leader, has opened this year.

Habbyshaw said Anderson’s location has been unique when compared to his other stores because of the excitement people have shown for the store to open.

“We have had people walking up to the doors and wanting in the building before we opened,” he said. “Besides Big Lots, there is nothing else like us here.”

Sandi Aul, of Muncie, said she was excited to learn an Ollie’s was opening. Aul lived in Mansfield, Ohio, and said she was a regular Ollie’s customer. She said her annual Christmas shopping spree always includes an Ollie’s.

“This is going to give Big Lots a run for the money,” she said.

Frank Dailey, of Anderson, stood near a display of discounted power tools and quickly found himself trapped by the large number of shoppers in the store. He said he was not shopping for anything in particular during the grand opening.

“I will buy something if I see something that jumps out at me,” he said with a smile.

Habbyshaw said the store’s customer service, products and great prices will quickly set it apart from its competitors.
