Dental clinic owner faces state hearing

ANDERSON, Ind. —  The owner of an Anderson dental clinic faces a cease-and-desist order today in a hearing with the Indiana State Board of Dentistry in Indianapolis.

Sally Metzner, of Yorktown, does not hold a dental license and is owner of Anderson Dental Center, 1537 S. Scatterfield Road, according to a complaint filed by the state deputy attorney general Darren Covington.

In its court filing, the state said it investigated a complaint about possible billing fraud at the center. The center, since 2006, has hired at least six dentists to provide services. Under Indiana law, anyone is considered in the practice of dentistry if that person employs a dentist hired to provide dental services.

On Nov. 25, the attorney general’s office filed a motion seeking a cease-and-desist order against Metzner.

The center is in the process of closing down with Metzner hoping to reopen as a different entity that meets state licensing qualifications, said attorney Daniel Whitehead who represents the dental center. The center has been in operation since about 2001 but was notified in 2011 that it did not meet Indiana code, Whitehead said Thursday.

Whitehead said he and Metzner met with state officials Thursday morning and do not plan to attend today’s hearing. The dental center is currently finishing up services to current clients and should be closed by Wednesday, Whitehead said. It may open later under a different name, Whitehead said.

Whitehead said Metzner is trying to work with the state to resolve the issue.
