ANDERSON — Dr. Mukund Patel has been promoted to Interim Chief Medical Officer of the Madison County Community Health Center, officials announced Friday.
He replaces Frank Campbell who was investigated by the state for allowing assistants to use his permit and registration number to issue prescriptions. The center was raided in September and the attorney general filed a six-count complaint against Campbell.
In the position of medical director, Patel assumes responsibility of overseeing the medical operations of the three locations, Anderson, Elwood and its Alexandria school-based clinic.
Patel, who has been a cardiologist with the health center, was formerly employed at Community Hospital in its Cardiology Department. He is board certified and a graduate of Grant Medical College, Bombay.
His promotion was announced through a press release Friday.
Also joining the health center team is Jessica Sparks, nurse practitioner. She is a recent graduate of Ball State University and was formerly employed as a nurse in the Community Hospital system for six years.
Patel will spend a day with Dr. John Tyndall, retired former Medical Director with the Ft. Wayne Health Center, and later he and his staff will visit with Dr. Donald Trainor, Medical Director of HealthNet Health Centers in Indianapolis.
The press release, which listed the center's Human Resources Director Frederick Malone as a contact, stated, "These visits with the state's two largest center networks will provide a clear orientation of the vital role that a health center plays in restoring and preserving the health of many in local communities. This will enable him to evaluate the implementation of federal standards to ensure that the center is compliant to others in the country."
Among the complaints filed by the attorney general against Campbell was the allegation that Campbell had "failed to keep abreast of current theory and practice" and was unfit to practice medicine. Attorney General Greg Zoeller filed the complaint in August with the Indiana Medical Licensing Board.
