Local nonprofits can apply for emergency funding

---- — ANDERSON — Madison County organizations will receive $63,459 in federal funds appropriated by Congress under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Congress has appropriated $113,805,031 to supplement and expand emergency food and shelter programs. Madison County’s award is based upon the total number of unemployed as compared to the total number of unemployed in all qualifying jurisdictions.

The National Board, chaired by FEMA, consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, and United Way Worldwide.

All organizations in Madison County are invited to apply for part of these funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Madison County. An organization need not be a certified agency of United Way of Madison County to apply for or receive this funding, but it must meet the following guidelines:

u be a private non-voluntary nonprofit or a governmental unit;

u have a checking account (cash payments are not allowed);

u have an accounting system in place;

u practice non-discrimination;

u have a federal employer identification number (FEIN);

u conduct an independent audit or annual review;

u be providing services and using other agency resources in the area in which they are seeking funding;

u to the extent practicable, involve homeless individuals and families, through employment, volunteer programs, etc., in providing emergency food and shelter services.

u have a demonstrated track record for delivering emergency food and/or shelter programs, and,

u if a private nonprofit, have an active voluntary board.

To obtain an application form, contact Kim Rogers-Hatfield, vice president of operations, United Way of Madison County, at 608-3067. Applications are due Monday by 5 p.m. to the United Way office, 1201 E. Fifth St., Suite 1019, Anderson, to be considered for funding for Phase 31.

A local board of representatives from the agencies on the national board and other persons required by federal guidelines will convene to consider all applications and make final distribution recommendations. Agencies recommended to receive funding will be notified in November of their award.
