---- — ANDERSON — Carol Peckinpaugh has already looked into a membership to one of the city’s newest fitness gyms — before it opens.
“I’m trying to get healthy,” Peckinpaugh said. “It’s new, nice and open 24 hours a day, five days a week. I’m retired and I can go whenever I want, so I like those hours.”
Planet Fitness is operating a temporary office outside its facilities at 4366 S. Scatterfield Road as the owners complete more than $1 million in renovations and equipment for the new gym. Officials say they hope to open before the winter holidays and they are receiving quite a bit of interest from potential gym members.
Peckinpaugh is joining a growing number of retirees looking to keep fit. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, members over 55 grew by more than 343 percent from 1987 to 2003 while those 35-54 increased by 180 percent.
Anna Majors, 24, is the manager of the new gym.
“We are a judgment-free zone,” she said of her facilities. “We don’t cater to body builders. We want to offer something in Anderson that people can afford and feel comfortable going in to work out in. We don’t have the big scary people here.”
Alex Baker, a regional manager for the fitness chain, said the Anderson location will offer 10 tanning beds, two massage chairs and two hydrobeds. Planet Fitness is open 24 hours a day through the week and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
The nearest Planet Fitness locations to the new Anderson facilities are in Kokomo and Muncie.
“We had been looking at Anderson for awhile,” Baker said. “We knew we were going to open one and we love the area. When we got word of mouth that the area is thriving again we decided it was time to open a gym here.
“We want this to be a place that is comfortable for first-time gym users.”
According to industry experts, health and fitness clubs generate $26 billion in revenue and those numbers are growing with more and more people striving to improve their overall health.
In addition to exercise equipment, Baker said Planet Fitness offers unlimited tanning and a free certified trainer with its memberships.
Kandis Chambers, 31, of Anderson has already signed up for the new gym.
“I’m motivated to work out again,” she said. “Now it’s just a matter of getting up off my lazy butt and using my membership.”
As Peckinpaugh weighs the benefits of joining a fitness club, she said like Chambers, she has also not had a perfect history when it comes to using her gym memberships.
“I had a membership for years and years and didn’t use it,” she said with a laugh.
