NBA's Teagues join effort to open Anderson's Wigwam

ANDERSON, Ind. — Two current players in the NBA with close ties to the iconic Anderson Wigwam have joined in the effort to open the complex, which has been closed since 2010.

Wigwam Sports and Entertainment, LLC, (WSE) which hopes to become the owner of the Wigwam complex for use as a future site for sporting, entertainment, convention, and trade show events, announced Monday the addition of the Teague family to its investment group.

The Teagues, a well-known basketball family, now join in the effort to “Revitalize The Wigwam,” as investors in the historic sports and entertainment venue in Anderson.

“Our family is excited to become a part of Wigwam Sports and Entertainment,” said Shawn Teague, who was a starter on the 1979 Anderson Indians team that was state runner-up in the annual IHSAA basketball tournament.

“Our entire family realizes the significance of the Wigwam and we are committed to this opportunity,” Teague said.

The family includes sons Jeff Teague, starting guard for the Atlanta Hawks, and Marquis Teague of the Brooklyn Nets.

Shawn Teague went on to play at the University of Missouri and then Boston College. Both Jeff and Marquis Teague graduated from Pike High School in Indianapolis and both played in the Wigwam during their high school careers.

The city of Anderson is still hopeful that proposals for the future use of the Wigwam complex will be received and approved by the Anderson Board of Public Works and the Anderson Community Schools board on June 11, Greg Winkler, director of the Economic Development Department, said Monday.

“The proposed request for proposal is being reviewed by the legal department,” he said. “I believe the city can accept requests for proposals even though the city doesn’t own the property.”

Winkler said no one other than WSE has expressed an interest in the property.
