ELWOOD, Ind. — ELWOOD — Choosing a career path is one of the biggest decisions a person can make in life. So what if you could give a career a test drive? Or shop for a job like a prom dress, trying it on for size before investing thousands in educational costs?

Today, you can.

The Madison County Education Coalition is offering an educational career expo for students in grades 8-12 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., today at the Elwood Community High School and Hinds Career Center, 1105 N. 19th St., in Elwood. The expo will allow students to observe a judicial system in action, perform mock operations and talk with experts in a variety of career fields.

The expo, which is free and open to students and their parents, will feature different careers including those in health care, architecture, construction, law, public service, education, business, hospitality, entertainment, technology and manufacturing.

Tami Daivs, career and education coordinator for Hinds Career Center, said students can toy with robotics, experiment with industrial painting equipment and even drive a semi with the help of a simulator. Emergency personnel will also be present to talk about safety careers and demonstrate the different types of equipment used to save lives. She said the career specialists are from Chrysler, Red Gold, local hospitals, Pioneer, AmeriCore VISTA, and even a local judge will be there.

This is the third year for the event and the first time the expo will be located in Elwood. Davis said officials hope to rotate the event across the county each year so the location is convenient to everyone.

“We want to get all the kids involved and reach as many students as possible,” Davis said.
