---- — ANDERSON — When it comes to making pizza, Mike Cravens likes to experiment.

“I can give people what they request and I like coming up with new food,” he said.

Cravens, who co-owns Smokehouse Pizza, 2343 N. Broadway, has several unique items on his menu including The Mac, which tastes like a McDonald’s Big Mac; pizzas made without dough; s’mores pizza and a 5-pound deluxe pizza.

“We sell made-from-scratch food,” he said. “Not from truck-ready food.”

Some of the pizzas and menu items were actually created or evolved from customers who made special requests.

Using a hand-tossed dough and a variety of toppings to experiment with, Cravens said the possibilities are endless.

Cravens, who owns Columbus Ave. Pizza in Anderson and Penn Ave. Pizza in Lapel, said he has worked in the pizza business since 1984.

“I have done pizza through hard times and good times,” he said. “I have seen food costs triple within the last 28 years, but we are still here.”

Prices are important to Cravens and his partner, Chrissy White, and the business duo say that is why they try to keep them low.

“Our food is at or below our competitors' prices,” Cravens said.

And deliveries are free.

Another area of importance for Cravens is the role his employees play in the business.

“We are very family oriented,” he said. “Anybody that works for Smokehouse or Penn Ave. Pizza are like family. Our employees are very kind and personable.”

He said each employee is carefully trained to offer the best service to their customers.

White said in addition to pizza, their menu includes sub sandwiches, desserts, salads, nachos and breadsticks.

"My favorite sandwich is the Stromboli," she said.

Smokehouse Pizza’s mission is to “keep on selling great food at great prices to keep customer’s happy.”
