Star Bank employees give back

ANDERSON, Ind. — On a day Star Financial Bank employees were supposed to have off, hundreds of them across the state were out working in communities trying to help those less fortunate.

Typically Columbus Day is a paid holiday for bank workers at Star Bank. Instead of sitting at home, employees of Anderson's three Star Banks were out in different locations helping the community as part of their third annual community service day.

Gary Erskine said each bank tries to get 10-15 employees to help out different nonprofits in the area. This year, they were helping the United Way, Dove Harbor and the Madison County Humane Society.

Erskine, who oversees four banks in the Madison County area, was helping a group of bankers at United Way's warehouse in Anderson. There, 15 volunteers were busy assembling boxes and putting weatherization materials in them for people who live in poor housing.

Ron Love, a loan reviewer at Star Bank, said they were putting materials like caulk, window sealant and other necessities into the boxes to help people make their houses more energy efficient. The United Way will then distribute the supplies to the people who need them the most.

"It's good to help people that are disadvantaged or can't help themselves," Love said. "It's very rewarding."

Clayton Wright, the manager of the Star Bank on 53rd Street, said giving back to the community is very important for his bank and every other Star Bank.

"I think community involvement is something that is overlooked often by corporations," Wright said. "But we are a community bank, we're not some global conglomerate. No matter the size of the community, it's important everyone be involved."

Statewide, Erskine said, 50 Star Banks participated in the community day.

"Everyone enjoys doing it and everyone gets a lot out of it," Erskine said.
