AU men win second straight

ANDERSON — The Anderson University men's basketball team defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin College 82-79 on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Ravens led 50-38 at the half and by as many as 18 points in the second half at 67-49 with 13 minutes left in the game. The Grizzlies used a 24-9 run over the next 10 minutes to cut the deficit to just four points at 76-73.

Franklin took its first lead of the game at 79-78 with just 47 seconds remaining, but AU responded with a layup by Max Mollaun with 28 seconds remaining for the game-winner. Micah Smith added two free throws with four seconds remaining for the final points.

Max Mollaun led the Ravens with 22 points, three rebounds, nine assists and four steals, hitting 8-of-21 field goals and all four of his free throws, including two 3-pointers.

Nate Gross had 15 points, two rebounds, five assists, two steals and Nathaniel Acree also had 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Smith added 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals and Scott Schwieterman gave the Ravens five players in double figures with 10 points and two blocks.

The Ravens shot 60 percent from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range and 9-of-13 from the free throw line. The Grizzlies were even better from the field, making 66 percent of their shots, including 1-of-4 from behind the arc and 20-of-27 from the charity stripe.

Franklin had a 25-19 advantage on the boards, but Anderson had the edge in points in the paint (56-50), assists (23-12), turnovers (18-25), points off turnovers (31-20), second chance points (11-3) and steals (16-13).

AU (2-11, 2-4 HCAC) travels to Manchester on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Women's Basketball

Franklin 66, Anderson 50: Shelby Shaffer led the Ravens with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, hitting 3-of-10 field goals and 10-of-14 free throws, including a 3-pointer.

Jenna Wittenberg was also in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds off the bench, making 5-of-17 shots. Cori Connor added eight points and four rebounds and Nyomi Defiel chipped in with five points and five rebounds.

The Ravens shot 35 percent from the field, including 3-of-10 from 3-point range and 17-of-22 from the free throw line. The Grizzlies were at 48 percent shooting, including 6-of-13 from behind the arc and 18-of-25 from the charity stripe.

Anderson had a 33-24 advantage on the boards, including 13-7 on the offensive glass. Franklin had the edge in points in the paint (24-16), assists (15-8), turnovers (20-26), points off turnovers (24-16) and steals (18-9).

AU (1-12, 0-6 HCAC) hosts Manchester on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
