AU softball sweeps Bluffton

ANDERSON, Ind. — The Anderson University softball team extended its school-record home winning streak with a sweep of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Bluffton University on Tuesday at Raven Field.

The Ravens won the first game 4-1 and the second contest 7-4, extending the streak to 20 games. The Beavers were the last team to defeat the Ravens at home in 2011.

In the first game, Sami Frazier won her sixth straight decision on the mound, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in seven innings while striking out eight with just one walk.

Katie Lee led the Ravens offense with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Amy Wuestefeld also had two hits and an RBI.

Lauren Smith added an RBI double, and Megan Ream and Samantha Steele chipped in with a hit and a run as AU outhit Bluffton 7-4.

In the second game, Ream led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, including a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Ravens a 4-0 lead.

Yardley Collett had three hits and an RBI, and Natalie Moorhouse added two hits and two RBIs. Wuestefeld chipped in with two hits, and Smith had a hit and an RBI.

Devin Moorman earned the victory on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out one with four walks. Lauren Smith tossed the final inning for her school-record seventh career save, breaking Hall of Famer Sara Rychener’s mark that had stood since 1999.

AU (14-8, 5-3 HCAC) travels to No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m.


TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Anderson University baseball team lost to HCAC foe Rose-Hulman 5-1 on Tuesday at Art Nehf Field.

Zack Hufferd led the Ravens offense with three hits and and the lone RBI in the second inning to score Cole Heberling, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Jeremy Shelmadine had two hits, and Jacob Craft chipped in with the other Ravens hit as the Engineers outhit the Ravens 10-7 in the contest.

Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the third inning and added three insurance runs in the fifth inning.

Brian Page dropped to 1-4 on the mound, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs in eight innings while striking out three with just one walk.

AU (10-14, 6-5 HCAC) travels to Earlham on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
