AU softball wins pair to remain alive

Ravens in final 3 of NCAA regional

ANGOLA — For the second time in three days, the Anderson University softball team knocked off top-seeded and No. 2 ranked Trine University 10-6 in the NCAA Div. III Regional on Saturday.

The eighth seeded Ravens also defeated the hosts 5-1 in the first game of the tournament on Thursday.

“Trine is a great team and to beat them twice in three days is a great accomplishment for our fans, players, coaches and program,” said AU coach Tony Holloway. “I’m proud of the way our team battled against one of the top teams in the nation and we played our game and executed the game-plan.”

The Ravens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added another in the second before pounding out six runs on six hits in the pivotal third inning to take an 8-1 lead. Lys Hess had a based-loaded triple to plate three runs and Amy Wuestefeld, Katy Ogden and Lauren Smith also had RBI singles in the inning.

“Both games we started off well against Trine and that gave us a lot of confidence throughout the rest of the game,” said Holloway. “Lys had the big hit today that broke it open and we kept putting pressure on them offensively.”

The Ravens tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning, including another RBI by Hess on a single to centerfield. Trine got single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings and finished with two unearned runs in the seventh to account for their scoring.

Hess led the Raven offense with two hits and four RBI and Katie Lee added two hits and two runs scored.

Smith earned the victory on the mound, allowing 13 hits and three earned runs in seven innigns while striking out four with just one walk.

“Lauren threw a great game and was really hitting her spots well,” Holloway said of his senior pitcher, who also won the HCAC

championship game last Saturday at Manchester. “She got the save in the first game and has had a great season for us.”

In the first game of the day, AU defeated Thomas More 9-6. Ogden led the Raven offense with three hits and two RBI and Yardley Collett added two hits and two RBI, including a home run.

Devin Moorman got the win on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs in 4.2 innings of work. Smith tossed the final 1.1 innings to get her ninth career save.

AU (28-16) will play No. 4 Aurora on Sunday at noon with the winner advancing to the championship game against Allegheny at 2 p.m.
