Ravens dominate HCAC team

AU softball team competes in NCAA tourney Thursday

ANDERSON, Ind. — Anderson University’s Amy Wuestefeld has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable

Player of the 2013 softball season and Sami Frazier was named the HCAC Pitcher of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year.

Wuestefeld lead the Ravens with a .482 batting average, five doubles, three triples, 21 RBI and a school-record 20 stolen bases. She has been All-HCAC for the last three years, including the first-team the past two seasons.

Frazier leads the team on the mound with a 10-2 record and a 0.74 ERA in 75.2 innings while striking out 61 with 17 walks. She set the HCAC record for ERA in conference play with a 0.17 ERA, allowing just one earned run. Frazier also batted .350 with five doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI.

All-HCAC second baseman Lauren Smith also doubled up on the mound and at the plate. She is 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA in 30.2 innings, including a complete game victory over Manchester in the HCAC championship game last Saturday. She also hit .378 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and 25 RBI.

Other All-HCAC 1st Team players for the Ravens include Yardley Collett of Shenandoah (.381, 8 doubles, 4 home runs, 32 RBI), Megan Ream (.369, 8 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 19 RBI, 9 stolen bases),  Katy Ogden (.322, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 11 RBI) and  Highland graduate Katie Lee (.263, 5 doubles, 3 triples, 10 RBI).

Anderson head coach Tony Holloway was named HCAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. Holloway, in his sixth season as head coach at Anderson, led the Ravens to a 25-15 mark and a 12-4 record in the HCAC this season, including the HCAC tournament championship

Team milestones for the Ravens this season include a school-record 24-game home winning streak, a HCAC-record 22-game winning streak, a HCAC tournament record eight straight wins and 46 consecutive HCAC games of scoring at least one run. AU was also shutout at home this season for the first time in over two years.

AU advanced to the NCAA Div. III national tournament for the third straight year with the victory over Manchester, becoming the first conference school to win three straight titles. They will be making their sixth NCAA Regional appearance (1999, 2000, 2007, 2011-13).

The Ravens will play No. 2-ranked Trine (36-3) in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Regional in Angola today at 10 a.m.
