BLUFFTON, Ohio —
The Anderson University baseball team defeated Bluffton University 6-5 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Friday.
Jeremy Shelmadine led the Raven offense with two hits, a run and an RBI, including a home run. Zach Garcia had two hits and Cole Heberling and Jacob Craft added a hit and an RBI each.
Dan Schmitz earned the victory on the mound, allowing four hits and one run in seven innings while striking out nine with six walks. Tyler Watson pitched a perfect eighth and Blake Hall earned his first safe after relieving closer Andrew Enderle and getting the final out of the game.
AU led 6-1 after eight innings, but the Beavers took advantage of four walks and added two hits to bring the tying run to third base. Hall got the final hitter to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the rally and contest.
AU (5-7, 1-0 HCAC) plays a doubleheader at Bluffton on Saturday at noon.
