Colts add extra-large offensive tackle

ANDERSON — It didn't take very long for Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson and his scouting staff to get back up to their old tricks.

The team announced Wednesday it has signed 6-foot-9, 320-pound offensive tackle Jack Breckner, who most recently played for the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League.

A product of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., Breckner was undrafted in 2010. He also has played for the Indoor Football League's Chicago Slaughter and the Ultimate Indoor Football League's Eastern Kentucky Drillers.

Though Indianapolis struggled on the interior of the offensive line throughout the 2013 season, tackles Anthony Castonzo and Gosder Cherilus played well and started all 16 games. Undrafted rookie Xavier Nixon also opened some eyes playing out of position as a guard and likely will move back to his natural tackle position this spring.

Veteran tackles Jeff Linkenbach (unrestricted) and Joe Reitz (restricted) are scheduled to become free agents on March 11, perhaps opening up a spot Breckner could compete for.

Grigson and his staff have found success mining pro football's minor leagues before.

Long snapper Matt Overton, a product of Western Washington University, was cut by the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks before being signed by the Colts in 2012. He made his first Pro Bowl appearance this year.

Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman, a product of Mary-Hardin Baylor, spent three years in the Canadian Football League before becoming Grigson's first official signee with the Colts in 2012. He has led Indianapolis in tackles in each of the past two seasons.
