Colts ready for prime time at training camp

ANDERSON, Ind. — For the only time this training camp, the Indianapolis Colts will practice under the lights tonight at Macholtz Stadium.

The session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until 8:55 p.m. A fireworks show will follow.

Night practices bring back good memories for the players and tend to add a little energy to the festivities.

“Anytime you go under the lights, man, you got the hair on the back of your neck standing up a little bit,” defensive end Cory Redding said. “It’s almost like Friday Night Lights football again.”

Night practices generally draw the largest crowds of training camp. In the past, these practices have drawn between 8,000 and 10,000 fans. Another big crowd is expected tonight.

Head coach Chuck Pagano compares the practice to the team’s annual June mini-camp session at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“We’re excited about tonight,” Pagano said. “The guys are excited about tonight. It’s great to be in the stadium. It’s great to be in front of the fans here. We’re expecting a huge crowd.”

Left guard Donald Thomas hit the ground following an 11-on-11 running drill and was visibly upset when he finally was helped to his feet. He threw his mouthguard away in anger and attempted to walk off the injury with trainers away from the rest of his teammates.

The team had committed far too many in 2012 and was determined not to repeat its mistakes. The theme at Anderson University carried over to the field, and the Colts' 14 turnovers were the fewest in the NFL last year.
