Colts Notebook: Landry still on the mend

ANDERSON, Ind. — ANDERSON — It's been nearly two weeks since safety LaRon Landry last practiced with the Indianapolis Colts.

Head coach Chuck Pagano held out small hope the free-agent addition might make his preseason debut Sunday against the New York Giants. But that scenario hinged on Landry returning to practice Thursday afternoon.

It didn't happen.

The Pro Bowl safety appeared only at the end of the two-hour session and then only to make a trip to the medical tent. Pagano said there wouldn't be much value in trying to put Landry into a game unless he previously took significant practice reps.

The missed time is a concern as the first-team defense works to gel together.

"You're trying to get that unit, all 11 starters, together and play together as much as you can," Pagano said. "It sets you back a little bit. But he's a sharp guy, and he came from a similar system (with the New York Jets). I think once he gets back in there, he'll be OK."

Practice report

Reserve quarterback Matt Hasselbeck made the throw of the day with a deep touchdown pass to LaVon Brazill.

The defensive highlight went to cornerback Vontae Davis who leapt high to break up a pass from Andrew Luck in the end zone. He didn't come down with the interception, however, and punished himself with push-ups.

Among the players not practicing were cornerback Teddy Williams, tight end Dwayne Allen, fullback Dan Moore, linebacker Josh McNary, running back Ahmad Bradshaw, offensive guard Hugh Thornton and guard/center Khaled Holmes.

Safety Joe Lefeged left practice early with a strained calf.

Roster move on the way?

With Dwayne Allen unlikely to play in Sunday's second preseason game and Coby Fleener recently returning from a concussion, depth at tight end could be an issue this weekend.
