Colts Notebook: Grigson not sweating Landry's absence

INDIANAPOLIS — LaRon Landry breezed through the Indianapolis Colts locker room Wednesday, declining to speak with reporters.

The veteran safety was missing from the practice field for the second consecutive day, but general manager Ryan Grigson said there's no need to worry.

"He's out there in parts unknown working out," Grigson said of Landry's career-long habit of skipping voluntary offseason workouts in favor of his personal regime. "We trust him in the fact that we know he's going to go harder than anyone. At the same time, you'd rather have a guy that you have to throttle down than ratchet up. He's got things that have flared up, and we're just making sure he's OK."

Landry missed four games because of injury during a disappointing debut season in Indianapolis last year. He still recorded 87 tackles but failed to be involved in a turnover — by either intercepting a pass or forcing a fumble — for the first time since his rookie season of 2007.

He'll have a new partner in the defensive secondary this year after Antoine Bethea signed as a free agent with San Francisco. Delano Howell, Sergio Brown, Colt Anderson and Mike Adams are among the players vying for that role. But they'll have to wait until training camp to see how they mesh with the incumbent.

Landry was not cleared for minicamp after taking a routine physical Monday. The Colts have declined to speak about Landry's injury in specific terms. Grigson allowed only that it's a "soft tissue" injury and it affects the lower body.

"He wants nothing more than to get out there with his brothers and show what he can do," Grigson said. "He has a presence about him, and he knows we expect great things out of him this year. We got to get him back out on the field as quick as possible, but we also don't want to set him back any further as well. He'll be fine."

Never mind that the punter's attempt came from 64 yards out — a distance that would have equaled the NFL record set by Matt Prater last year. McAfee was focused only on the 27-26 loss against the New York Giants and how his right foot could have changed it.
