Wayne serves notice he's ready for camp

INDIANAPOLIS — Most of the Indianapolis Colts' veterans got a day off Thursday as the team completed a three-day mandatory minicamp.

But Reggie Wayne was a whirling dervish of activity in the locker room. Shortly after he completed his daily rehab routine, the 35-year-old wide receiver dressed in his full home uniform and raced to a photo shoot with the team's marketing department.

As the rookies and other assorted youngsters who had just finished practice caught sight of the iconic blue No. 87 jersey, conversations throughout the room abruptly came to a halt. All eyes turned toward the six-time Pro Bowler.

Colts fans soon should have a similar experience because Wayne expects to be ready to take the field next month for training camp at Anderson University.

"Like I told our receiver coach (Charlie Williams), I said, 'I'm that Chevy that's in the garage. As soon as you open the garage, I'm out. I'm gone,'" Wayne said. "So I'm just waiting until they tell me I can go on and suit up and be a normal football player. Up until then, I'll kind of help teach a little bit and do as much as I possibly can."

For the duration of the three-day minicamp, that meant a healthy dose of side work — wind sprints on an adjacent field and other assorted conditioning excercises throughout the day.

But Wayne said he already has run a few routes, and he has full confidence in the stability of his right knee. He missed the final nine regular-season games last season — and both playoff contests — after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament late in an Oct. 20 victory against Denver.

He's motivated to make up for lost time with his teammates. And also to live up to his own legend.
