Colts announce camp slate for AU

ANDERSON — The Indianapolis Colts released their full 2014 training camp schedule Monday, confirming the team will report to Anderson University on July 23.

Practice begins July 24 with 16 sessions open to the public by the time camp breaks on Aug. 13.

This is the fifth straight summer the Colts will train at AU and the 20th time overall since the franchise moved to Indiana in 1984.

Position battles along the interior of the offensive line, at wide receiver and at safety will highlight the three-week training camp.

"You look at this team today compared to when we started (in 2012), like I told the team this morning it's going to be really, really difficult, and I told our staff, really difficult to get to 53 (players on the roster) this year," head coach Chuck Pagano said Thursday as Indianapolis finished up its three-day mandatory minicamp. "When we get to final cut-down, it's going to be difficult."

Practice will be open to the public most days from 1:50 to 4:25 p.m., with a few exceptions.

Most notably, the annual night practice will begin at 6:20 p.m. on July 31. The practice is part of the "BBQ Bash at Training Camp," and the Colts also will host Kids Day on July 26, Armed Forces Day on July 27 and Fan Clubs Day on Aug. 9.

The players will have off days July 29, Aug. 3 and Aug. 8, and there also will be no practice Aug. 6 while the team travels to East Rutherford, N.J., for the Aug. 7 preseason opener against the New York Jets.

The return of veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne — who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during an Oct. 20 win against the Denver Broncos and missed the remainder of the season — will be among the camp's primary storylines.

Wayne will rejoin an offense directed by third-year quarterback Andrew Luck that is projected to be among the most prolific in the NFL. That's helping to drive high expectations among league observers and inside the team's locker room.

"They're in a good place, they've got the right mindset," Pagano said of his players as minicamp concluded. "We've got a great locker room. We've got a great squad young and old. We've got great veteran leadership. So as a coach and as a coaching staff and as an organization, owner, GM, whatever, couldn't ask for anything more. So eager to get back to work."
