Colts tab OSU's Mewhort in Round 2

INDIANAPOLIS — Ryan Grigson values versatility in his offensive lineman. And they don't come much more versatile than Jack Mewhort.

The Ohio State senior was selected Friday by the Indianapolis Colts with the 59th overall pick in the NFL draft. He played left tackle for the past two seasons with the Buckeyes, was a guard in 2011 and was an All-American at center in high school.

"I'm the type of guy you can point me in the right direction, and I'll figure it out and I'll go play it," Mewhort said during a conference call with local reporters.

Mewhort said he had good contact with Colts offensive line coach Joe Gilbert leading up to the draft, but he hasn't been told of any specific plans the team has for him.

For the time being, he's happy just to be headed to the NFL.

"On draft day, anything can happen," Mewhort said. "Getting drafted at all is quite an accomplishment, let alone a team that's right up the street from my hometown and just one state over."

The 6-foot-6, 309-pounder is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and started 38 of his 49 games at Ohio State. He capped his senior season by being named a first-team All-American by ESPN and earning second-team honors from Walter Camp, The NFL Draft Report, the Associated Press, CBS Sports.com, Sports Illustrated and the Football Writers Association.

Mewhort impressed as a right tackle during Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Ala., with some scouts pegging him as a future starter at that position. His immediate future appears to be at guard, but he's not putting any limits on himself.

"I've always had an open mind, and I have an ability to learn," Mewhort said. "I can catch on quickly. I'm not built like some of these freak right tackles out here. So I've never been pegged in as that."
