Physical Mewhort could be a good fit for Colts

INDIANAPOLIS — Jack Mewhort’s new general manager already has compared him to a six-time Pro Bowler. And his head coach went one step further, likening his physique to that of a super hero.

His coach at Ohio State, Urban Meyer, calls him one of the “top four or five” players he’s been around in a 27-year coaching career.

That’s some high praise for the Indianapolis Colts’ second-round draft pick. But the versatile offensive lineman is keeping things simple.

“I’m here to play offensive line,” he said Friday, between the morning walk-through and afternoon practice on the first day of the team’s rookie mini-camp. “I’ve played a lot of different positions through my years of football, and that’s what I intend to do here. I want to learn them all so that if there’s ever a situation where they need me, I’ll be ready for it.”

Mewhort was a starter at left tackle for two years at Ohio State and played left guard during his sophomore year. At the Senior Bowl in January, he impressed scouts as a right tackle.

His immediate future in Indianapolis appears to be on the inside. He worked out at left guard and center Friday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center.

And general manager Ryan Grigson made a lofty comparison to a former New England Patriots first-round draft pick during a radio appearance with host Dan Dakich on 1070 The Fan earlier this week.

“When Logan Mankins was coming out, he’s kind of a similar type guy to me,” Grigson said. “You thought, he’s probably not a left tackle, but if you left him there he would be a good, solid starter. But we want guys that are going to play at a spot where they are going to ascend to their highest level, and I think that might be guard. But you never know.”

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
