Colts cut Saunders, sign rugby star

ANDERSON, Ind. — Weslye Saunders' third strike proved to be his last with the Indianapolis Colts.

The team announced it had released the third-year tight end Thursday. Saunders is facing an eight-game suspension to start the season after his third violation of the NFL's performancing-enhancing drug policy.

He served a four-game suspension in 2011 with the Pittsburgh Steelers after his second offense. There is no suspension for a first-time violation.

Saunders appeared in 11 games with the Colts last season, starting four. He had two receptions for 15 yards.

Indianapolis filled his roster spot with an intriguing addition.

Daniel Adongo is a 23-year-old native of Kenya who never has played a down of American football. His background is in professional rugby, and he has competed for teams in Kenya, South Africa and New Zealand.

"We are excited as an organization with the acquisition of Daniel Adongo," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a press release. "He is not only an elite athlete and rising international rugby player, but he is an exceptional competitor and human being that has the right makeup for our sport. We all look forward to watching his growth and development in the ensuing weeks."

The Colts finish up a three-day rookie mini-camp at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center on Friday and report to training camp at Anderson University on Saturday. The first training camp practice is scheduled for Sunday.
