Colts Report Card: Week 4

COLTS 37, JAGUARS 3

Player of the Game

Robert Mathis, OLB, Colts

On a day in which the Indianapolis defense allowed just 40 rushing yards and the secondary intercepted three passes, there were several candidates on that side of the ball. Mathis gets the nod with a team-high five tackles and three sacks. Despite being the focus of opposing offensive lines on every snap, Mathis has a healthy 7.5 sacks for the season and is closing in on 100 for his career.

GRADES

Offense: B+

The Colts essentially took the first quarter off, looking like a mess of inconsistency and miscommunication. But they poured on 20 points in the second quarter and never looked back. Andrew Luck threw for 260 yards and two scores, and the team racked up 437 yards of total offense. Reggie Wayne caught five passes for 100 yards and one touchdown, and Donald Brown provided a tremendous spark off the bench with 65 rushing yards on just three carries.

Defense: A

Colts-killer Maurice Jones-Drew gained just 23 yards on 13 carries, and the Jaguars' only points were set up by a short field after Luck's lone interception. Indianapolis hounded Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert, sacking him four times and intercepting three passes. In just his second start of the year, Gabbert finished17-of-32 for 179 yards. The Colts got interceptions from Vonate Davis, Darius Butler and Josh Gordy — with Butler returning his pick for a touchdown.

Special Teams: B

Adam Vinatieri made all three of his field-goal attempts, Pat McAfee boomed a 60-yard punt and the Colts kept the Jacksonville return game bottled up. David Reed averaged 22 yards on two kickoff returns in his Indianapolis debut, but T.Y. Hilton couldn't break free on five punt returns — his longest gain was nine yards.
