Colts’ next step is Pep

Indy tabs Stanford coordinator Hamilton to replace Arians

ANDERSON, Ind. — It took the Indianapolis Colts less than 24 hours to find a replacement for offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. And he comes from a school that is becoming increasingly familiar with the team.

According to multiple reports, Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton agreed Friday to accept the same position in Indianapolis. The move, which was first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, reunites with Hamilton with quarterback Andrew Luck, tight end Coby Fleener and wide receiver Griff Whalen.

With all four on board in 2011, the Cardinal set a school record with 561 points, averaging 43.2 per game. Stanford also set a school record with 6,361 yards of total offense and averaged 210.6 rushing yards per game.

After the season, an anonymous donor endowed the Cardinal’s offensive coordinator position with the stipulation the post be officially renamed the Andrew Luck Director of Offense.

Now the first coach to hold that title again is directing Luck.

But Hamilton’s resume goes far deeper than his work with the Colts’ record-setting rookie.

He has seven years of full-time coaching experience in the NFL, most recently as quarterbacks coach for the Chicago Bears from 2007-09. The team had its third-best passing season (3,701 yards) in 2007, Kyle Orton had the franchise’s fifth-best completion percentage (58.5) in 2008 and Jay Cutler set franchise records for completions (336) and attempts (555) in 2009.

Hamilton also served as the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks coach in 2006 and was on the New York Jets’ staff from 2003-05.

He was a quarterback at Howard University from 1993-96 and began his coaching career at the school in 1997. He served as the Bison’s offensive coordinator from 1999-2001 and worked in the summer with the Kansas City Chiefs (2000), Washington Redskins (2001) and Baltimore Ravens (2002).

Trotter reported Hamilton will fly to Indianapolis Saturday to officially sign his contract.

The Colts’ coaching staff still might not be set for 2013, however. There were reports emerging Friday that offensive line coach Harold Goodwin could join Arians in Arizona as his offensive coordinator.

Bjoern Werner's rookie training camp was rather quiet. The German-born outside linebacker went through individual drills and worked hard in full-team sessions, but he was overwhelmed by all the new information he was processing. And it was holding him back. When the season started, Werner was further set back by a foot injury that cost him three games, and he finished the year with just 2.5 sacks. Then the former Florida State star went to work.
