Maleah Stringer: Tireless abandoned dog a reminder of need for vigilance

Princess Ruby is a Chihuahua, Boston Terrier and Heinz 57 mix. She is a little ball of energy who is cute as a button. Ruby was abandoned in a home and brought in by the neighbors. She looked so sad and lonely in her cage, her eyes following me every time I walked by. I'd hold her and she'd snuggle right up under my chin, shaking. I couldn't stand it; I decided to foster her.

Ruby loves to ride in the car on the way home; she curled up in the seat and gazed at me with her big eyes. My heart melted and I thought, "Ahhhhh." I always secure the leashes in the car just in case. Little did I know she had become unsecured. Once home, when I opened the door and turned to grab the leash, she launched herself across my lap and was out the door like a bullet, leash flying in the wind.

She is a monster; and I'm pretty sure there are springs in her legs. Ruby runs very fast. She took a tour of the neighborhood, always keeping me in sight but refusing to come to me. Gone was the sad, lonely little dog. In her place was a wild thing. I'm pretty sure when she looked back at me she was laughing. There were times I told her I was going home. I turned my back and started back home. Little Miss Thing realized I was no longer following her so she started to circle me.

I noticed a woman in a little red car following behind, watching the show. This kind lady took pity on me and blocked Ruby in a yard with her car. She opened the door, called her and Princess Ruby put her head down and went right to her — while watching me out of the corner of her eye, still laughing. Brat.
