You have just signed lots of papers, shaken hands with the sellers and been handed the keys to your new home. Here are a few considerations as you begin to address the many details of moving.
• Have all the utilities put into your name on the day of closing.
• Change all the locks on all the doors as soon as possible, since you have no idea who had a key to this home in the past.
I recommend going to a home improvement store and purchasing new locks in the color and style you like. Ask the salesperson whether the locks can be keyed alike so that the same key will open all the doors.
You'll also want to check the locks on the windows and any patio doors. By taking these precautions, you will feel safe and sound in your new home.
• Make certain to store your closing package in a secure place. It's a good idea to scan all the paperwork, put it on a storage device and keep it in a separate location. Some title companies will do this for you and give you a disc with everything on it.
• Go to the courthouse three-four weeks after your closing to file your Homestead and Mortgage exemptions. Take your closing package with you; they will need to see some of the documents. Save the receipts. This is your only proof that the exemptions were filed.
• Send a change-of-address notification to the local post office. Be sure the address is visible on your home and/or mailbox.
• Take a tape measure to your new home to measure the rooms for new flooring, window coverings and/or paint. If window coverings did not come with the home, it is a good idea to get them up as quickly as possible. You do not want people to be able to look in and see your belongings.
