Verna Davis: With no apologies, sometimes we must speak up

Sometimes something happens that is so unfair, and we feel we must speak up.

Sometimes some people profess to believe things that we know just can't be true, and we feel we must speak up. Sometimes something we read strikes us as downright stupidly absurd, and we feel we must speak up.

With no apologies and with full knowledge that this column may generate a few emails and/or phone calls in response, I believe there are times we must speak up.

It's time for Christians to stop fighting and bickering among themselves. We must recognize the absolute truth of James 3:9-10: "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be." I agree. Our bickering and fighting should not be. It doesn't matter who's right or who's wrong. It doesn't matter who started the whole thing. It doesn't matter who defends whom or who is whose side. What matters is that we stop. Period. Stop fighting. Stop being disagreeable. It's time.

It's time for Christians to start loving others as God commanded. It's so easy to think of ourselves as loving people when we love those around us. It's easy to love those who also love us. But if we want to really be known as people who love, we need to recognize the absolute truth of Matthew 5:46-47: "If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?" Instead, as should love the way Jesus told us to in John 13:34: "As I have loved you, so you must love one another." We should stop saying we love others and start showing our love to others. It's time.
